The Parkdale Group is a consultancy based in Kyoto, Japan focused on medical devices that helps overseas companies enter the Japanese market. Philip O’Neill is its Representative Director. In its early years, as it was building its reputation, it provided detailed quotations for free to prospective overseas clients. These quotes were time consuming and provided a significant amount of valuable information for these potential clients. Unfortunately, over time it became apparent that some of these companies would happily accept the quote but not enter into a contractual agreement with the Parkdale Group for consulting services. They worked for over a year with an overseas supplier of a product that they felt would be well received by medical doctors in Japan. When the time came to approach the Japanese government regulator to gain product approval for use in Japan, overseas clinical trial documentation was no where to be found. Indeed, the supplier said that this information could not be found. This is a key piece of data that must be presented to the regulator before any product can approved for use in the Japanese market. Philip’s challenge was to figure out next steps. Susan Barthos is the former Executive Director of People Worx located in Kentville, Canada. People Worx helps people learn, earn and volunteer. An entity that is almost 100 percent government funded, the challenge she faced was to determine which relationships were the most important and which should be given the highest priority in a situation where her employer's funding has been depleted.
