Willem Ellis is a Lecturer at the University of The Free State in Bloemfontein South Africa and a volunteer board member of a regionally located women’s shelter. Recently the shelter experienced the passing of its founder. As with many non-profits, the organization has struggled to maintain adequate funding and is sometimes challenged by operational issues as it seeks to provide helpful services to its vulnerable clients. As part of its governance activities, the board discovered the legal governance form of the organization is not what it understood it to be.
