Clearwater 1
In this multimedia case, Ian Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Clearwater Seafoods addresses a multifaceted issue that his company recently needed to resolve. He needed to figure out how to increase the profitability of its sea scallop quota knowing that it is a fixed amount and it is a sustainably harvested species and they were not going to be able to get an increase in their quota. He also needed to increase the efficiency of processing or the shucking of the scallops onboard their fishing vessels. Finally given that scallops are still shucked by hand and workers do the shucking on each vessel, he was aware that his company's workforce was aging and although well payed there were significant concerns around occupational health and safety due to repetitive motion injuries.
